NIST is the United States government's official agency for weights and measures. Formerly known as the National Bureau of Standards for many years it has made sure the nation's measures were accurate for commercial dealings. Today's agency also covers scientific and technical measures and produces data collections relevant to many technical areas in compilations like the NIST Chemistry Webbook and others (many available for sale).
