This guide is intended as a basic introduction to the AMA 11th edition citation style.

Explanation

Author of the chapter/article: Wallace RJ Jr, Griffith DE.
Last name first, abbreviate first and middle names to just the first initial with no periods in between. Place a comma between authors. If there are more than six authors listed, give the first three authors followed by et al. End with a period.


Title & subtitle of the chapter/article in the book: Antimycobacterial agents.
The title & subtitle, if any, are separated by a colon. Capitalize only the first word of the title and all proper nouns or names. Do not italicize the article title. End with a period.


Author or editor of the book: In: Kasper DL, Fauci AS, Longo DL, Braunwald E, Hauser SL, Jameson JL, eds.
First put In: and then the last name first, abbreviate first and middle names to just the first initial with no periods in between. Place a comma between multiple authors/editors. If there are more than six authors listed, give the first three authors followed by et al.  For editors, after the comma add ed. (one editor) or eds. (multiple editors) End with a period.


Title & subtitle of the book: Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine.
The title & subtitle, if any, are separated by a colon. Capitalize all major words. Italicize the title. End with a period.


Edition number: 16th ed.
Do not indicate a first edition. Give edition number in ordinal format such as 2nd, 3rd and so on followed by ed. End with a period.


Publisher: McGraw-Hill;
Use the full name of the publisher from the book's title page but format & abbreviate it per the rules in section 3.12.9 & 14.7. End with a semi-colon. 


Year of Publication: 2005:
List the year of publication, which appears on the title page or the title page verso (back side of title page). End with a colon with no spaces in between.


Page Number(s): 946-959.
Give the page or page numbers the article is on. End the citation with a period.
