Public Health Fellowship

American Public Health Association (APHA)

APHA is looking for candidates with strong public health credentials who wish to spend one year in Washington, D.C. working in a CONGRESSIONAL office on legislative and policy issues such as health, the environment or other public health concerns. The fellow will have the opportunity to see first-hand how public policy impacts public health and to offer their public health expertise to policymakers.

Villers Fellowship

Families USA

The Villers Fellowship for Health Care Justice was created in 2005 by Phillippe Villers, founder and president of Families USA, to inspire and develop the next generation of health care justice leaders. Villers Fellows will work on a variety of health care justice issues and develop an understanding of the federal legislation process. They will also be exposed to different advocacy strategies, including producing analytic reports, disseminating effective messages through the media, successful coalition building, and e-advocacy techniques.

Wellstone Fellowship

Families USA

The Wellstone Fellow’s primary responsibilities include assisting in the organization of conferences and trainings for advocates and community leaders; drafting talking points, blogs, fact sheets, and other publications; and developing content for the Families USA website and email lists. During the year, the Fellow will learn about health reform implementation, health equity, Medicaid, Medicare, and other important health policy issues. At the same time, the Wellstone Fellow will develop an understanding of the tactics and strategies used in state-based consumer health advocacy organizations and will work directly with our network of state consumer health advocates and organizations.

Women’s Research and Education Institute (WREI)

Established in 1980, the WREI Fellowship program is designed to:

  • encourage more effective participation by women in the formulation of policy options
  • promote activities that encourage the translation of research into policy

Administrative Fellowship

Memorial Healthcare System

The Memorial Healthcare System (MHS) Administrative Fellowship is a one-of-a-kind experience. The Administrative Fellow will spend the year in one of the “100 Best Places to Work in Health Care” as voted on by Becker’s ASC Review/ Becker’s Hospital Review, 2011.

The Fellow will rotate through the six hospitals and the corporate and support services of Memorial Healthcare System, which serves the population of South Broward County. Memorial Healthcare System is a public safety-net system that has the privilege of providing safe, quality, cost-effective care for all patients regardless of their ability to pay and MHS aims to improve the health of the community.

In addition to the hospital rotations, the Fellow will attend weekly Executive Staff meetings, weekly Administrative Team meetings in each hospital, and monthly meetings with the MHS President & CEO. The Fellow will have daily interaction with hospital Administrative Teams, Department Leaders, physicians and staff members. The Fellow will attend monthly operating reviews of each entity and monthly Board of Commissioners meetings. The Fellow will have the opportunity to lead projects at the hospital level and also at the system level.

Post-Graduate Specialty Fellowship

Mount Sinai Medical Center (Miami Beach)

The postgraduate specialty fellowship program at Mount Sinai Medical Center allows recent graduates who know their desired health care specialty to receive hands-on training for a one- year period.  

Specialty fellows participate in substantive projects and receive subject area expertise along with critical workplace skills development.  Fellows receive a salary stipend commensurate with qualifications.

GHATP Administrative Fellowship

West Palm Beach VA Medical Center

The one year Administrative Fellowship Program at the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center is part of the Department of Veterans Affairs Graduate Healthcare Administration Training Program (GHATP) and is precepted by the Medical Center Director. The West Palm Beach VA Medical Center is a member of the VA Sunshine Healthcare Network, serves seven counties and operates 6 Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs). The Medical Center provides secondary and tertiary care in medicine, psychiatry and surgery, has a large extended care unit, a Blind Rehabilitation Center that serves as the referral center for all blind and visually impaired veterans in the State of Florida, and a newly implemented Internal Medicine Residency Program. The Medical Center has a major focus in primary care with over 63,000 enrolled patients and over 500,000 outpatient visits per year. The Administrative Fellow will complete formal rotations in all departments at the facility and at VA National Headquarters, with opportunities for additional rotations at the Network and healthcare facilities in the community. The Fellow will routinely attend meetings with top management, participate in process improvement teams, and be assigned to design and complete projects that will improve analytical skills, encourage innovative thought, increase knowledge of health care administration, and assist the Fellow in achieving his or her professional developmental goals.

Southern California offers a flexible 24-month fellowship that includes three rotations: two at a medical center and/or service area, and one at the regional offices. The administrative fellowship program is a 12-month program consisting of facility and departmental rotations, project management, one-on-one mentoring, attendance at various Health System and facility meetings and events.
