MSMS 6007 - Marine Mammalogy

The Commission was created under Title II of the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972. The Commission's primary focus and duties are the protection and conservation of marine mammals. This site provides a single point of information on the activities, programs, and publications of the Marine Mammal Commission and its Committee of Scientific Advisors on Marine Mammals, and conveys other relevant information on the conservation and protection of marine mammals and their ecosystems.

There are five field stations located throughout Florida that respond to reports of sick, injured, distressed, or dead marine mammals. Field station wildlife experts are involved in core research projects lead by colleagues stationed at the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute headquarters in St. Petersburg; these projects include the Manatee Photo-identification Program, Population Monitoring, Radiotelemetry and Tracking, Genetics Sampling, and Manatee Warm-Water Habitat Temperature Monitoring. Staff also attend outreach events to promote manatee stewardship through education.

The 2016 Southeast and Mid-Atlantic Marine Mammal Symposium (SEAMAMMS) will take place April 1-3, 2016, in Savannah, GA and will be hosted by Savannah State University and The Dolphin Project.

The mission of the international Society for Marine Mammalogy (SMM) is to promote the global advancement of marine mammal science and contribute to its relevance and impact in education, conservation and management.

The Southeast Student Chapter (SESC) was established in 2016 as a merger between The Gulf Coast Student Chapter and the Florida Student Chapter. Our mission is to create a welcoming and supportive environment for undergraduate and graduate students in the southeast region of the US and the Caribbean to discuss and foster their interests in the research and conservation of marine mammals.
