One Person Can Change the World Symposium

In this three week symposium, students will explore America's expression, conceptions, and politics around issues of equality in order to model and implement plans to make a change in their local and global communities. To complete this course, students will explore concepts and forms of equality that have informed American culture and communities in three distinct historical periods: Up to 1865, 1865-1960, and 1960-present. At the end of this course, students will produce a Change Project integrating viewpoints that are intellectually and politically aware as well as culturally sensitive.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

• Recognize the plural ways concepts of 'equality' and 'change' may be understood in literary, philosophical, and political contexts.
• Evaluate how diverse thoughts, expressions, and decisions may broaden and narrow awareness of issues around equality and change.
• Develop a practical plan to enact change for yourself and/or your community that reflect intellectual and political awareness and cultural sensitivity.
