African American Graphic Novels

A list of graphic novels written by African Americans and/or about the African American experience.

What are graphic novels?

A graphic novel is a book-length comic that tells a story using sequential art and text. It can be fiction, non-fiction, or an anthology. Graphic novels are distinguished from comic books by being longer forms that often wrap up a story in one or two books rather than many issues. They use techniques like panels, frames, gutters, bleeds, foreground/midground/background, graphic weight, shading, captions, speech balloons, and special lettering to visually tell the story through layout and artwork.
