Getting started

Accountants and auditors prepare and examine financial records. Most accountants tend to specialize in a particular area. Some popular accounting specialties are public, managerial, government, tax, financial, forensic and auditing. They work in a variety of settings, ranging from payroll services, insurance, government or tax preparation.

What Are Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)?

A common set of accounting rules, standards, and procedures that public companies in the U.S. must follow for financial reporting purposes.
