Get Started with Basic Research

This guide provides an introductory overview of how to use library resources as well as tips for researching information and citing sources.

www ≠ database

Library databases are not the same as websites!

  • A library database is a collection of information published electronically by a credible source or publishing company.  The information in a database is arranged into records that can be searched by a computer.
  • While you may find a lot of results when using Google, Bing, or other search engines on the internet, these results may not be appropriate to use for your assignments.  Instead, search the internet to brainstorm ideas and then research those concepts in the library's databases.
  • By using library databases, you'll have access to a lot of scholarly articles that are not freely available on the internet.
