NSU Oceanographic Campus Library: Circulation Policies

NSU Oceanography Library Identification Policy

All assets of the NSU Oceanographic Campus Library (OCL) are available to NSU current students, faculty, and staff.  In order to receive services at the Circulation Desk of the OCL it is mandatory to have one of the following applicable identification:

NSU ID, aka SharkCard.
The SharkCard is required from all NSU current students, faculty and staff.  Acquire one here.

Check in
Borrowers are responsible for returning NSU Library materials by their due dates. Materials are checked in the same day that they are returned. Returned materials have to be in good condition to be able to be checked in. The library reserves the right to assess and declare the condition of all returned library materials.

Check out
Borrowers must visit the Circulation Desk to check out any type of an NSU Library circulating material. The NSU Shark Card is required for check outs. No other kind of identification is accepted for check outs. Borrowing privileges, loan periods, and fines may vary depending on the patron type, item type and item location. For further information please refer to Borrowing privileges and Fines policies listed below.

Renewals
If a Checked Out item is not overdue and there no holds placed on it, it can be renewed as follows:

  • Online through My Library Account.
  • Over the phone by calling the Circulation Desk at (954) 262-3699.
  • In person by visiting the Circulation Desk.

Once a Checked Out item is overdue, even if there are no holds on the item it must be physically brought into the Oceanographic Campus Library in order to be renewed.

NSU students can find the course reserves items in NovaCat by the professor’s name or the course number.

Course reserves items circulate for 2 hours (in library use only) or for 24 hours.

Reserve materials can be checked out at the Circulation Desk.

Students must present a current SharkCard to check out reserve materials.

The Oceanographic Campus Library no longer implements overdue fines. However, failure to renew or return items in a timely fashion will result in students being charged for the cost of the item(s).

Borrowing privileges will be suspended until all overdue materials are returned and/or fines paid. Library blocks may be put in effect if the fines are in excess of $5.00.

NSU students or staff records that are blocked will result in unavailability of student transcripts and/or graduation.

  • Fines for lost/damaged materials are the cost of the item plus an additional $15.00 processing fee. If the item is out of print, the fine is a $35.00 charge plus an additional $15.00 processing fee. See the library’s Material Replacement Policy for more information.
  • OCL fines can be viewed online through My Library Account. OCL fines can be paid here.

The Circulation desk sends notices, either by regular mail or e-mail, to patrons alerting them of overdue materials and/or fines owed.

If library materials are not returned by the due date, library notices are sent as a courtesy. Two overdue notices will be sent, and if necessary, a final notice stating the charges incurred for the item(s).

Failure to receive a library notice does not remove the borrower’s obligation to return the materials by the due date and it does not constitute grounds for reducing a borrower’s fine.

If you cannot find an item on the shelf, please inform library staff so they may assist you.
