Borrowers must visit the Circulation Desk to check out any type of an NSU Library circulating material.
An NSU Shark Card is required for check outs. No other type of identification is accepted for check outs.
Borrowing privileges, loan periods, and fines may vary depending on the patron type, item type and item location.
For further information please refer to Borrowing Privileges and Fines policies listed below.
Borrowers are responsible for returning NSU Library materials by their due dates.
Returned materials have to be in good condition to be able to be checked in.
The library reserves the right to assess and declare the condition of all returned library materials.
Oceanographic Campus Library books can be returned to any NSU Library.
OC Library Technology, including cameras, tablets, and laptops, must be checked out and returned to the Oceanographic Campus Library. They cannot be returned at other NSU Library locations.
If a Checked Out item is not overdue and there no holds placed on it, it can be renewed as follows:
Online through My Library Account before its due date.
Over the phone by calling the Circulation Desk at (954) 262-3699.
In person by visiting the Circulation Desk.
Once a Checked Out item is overdue, even if there are no holds on the item, it must be physically brought into the Oceanographic Campus Library in order to be renewed.
NSU students can find the course reserves items in NovaCat by the professor’s name or the course number.
Course reserves items circulate for 2 hours (in library use only) or for 24 hours.
Reserve materials can be checked out at the Circulation Desk.
Students must present a current SharkCard to check out reserve materials.
The Oceanographic Campus Library no longer implements overdue fines. However, failure to renew or return items in a timely fashion will result in students being charged for the cost of the item(s).
Borrowing privileges will be suspended until all overdue materials are returned and/or fines paid. Library blocks may be put in effect if the fines are in excess of $5.00.
NSU students or staff records that are blocked will result in unavailability of student transcripts and/or graduation.
Fines for lost/damaged materials are the cost of the item plus an additional $15.00 processing fee. If the item is out of print, the fine is a $35.00 charge plus an additional $15.00 processing fee. See the library’s Material Replacement Policy for more information.
OCL fines can be viewed online through My Library Account. All fines can be paid here.
The Circulation desk sends notices, either by regular mail or e-mail, to patrons alerting them of overdue materials and/or fines owed.
If library materials are not returned by the due date, library notices are sent as a courtesy. Two overdue notices will be sent, and if necessary, a final notice stating the charges incurred for the item(s).
Failure to receive a library notice does not remove the borrower’s obligation to return the materials by the due date and it does not constitute grounds for reducing a borrower’s fine.
If you cannot find an item on the shelf, please inform library staff so they may assist you.

Library patrons may place a hold on materials based on the following:
NSU Halmos College of Arts and Sciences - Ocean Campus Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations published until mid-2015 are available in print at the Oceanographic Campus Library.
The process for requesting this type of material is as follows:
Faculty can contact an Oceanographic Campus Librarian to have an item in our collection put on reserve for their course.
The following items may be placed on reserve by Faculty/Professor:
Note: Whenever possible, Oceanographic Campus Librarians will purchase required marine science textbooks that are not already in the collection. If you are adding a new required textbook to one of your courses, please notify an Oceanographic Campus Librarian as early as possible, as ordering and receiving physical books can sometimes take months.
Faculty members are responsible for obtaining copyright permission if applicable for print course reserves. For assistance or further information about obtaining copyright permission, visit the Copyright and Fair Use Resources or the Office of Copyright.
Faculty may request removal of reserve materials at any time.
Oceanographic Campus Librarians request that faculty notify them when they change or remove requited textbooks so library staff can update course guides and reserves lists accordingly.
At the end of each semester, items that are expired will be removed from the reserves shelf. If they belong to the professor they will be returned to him/her via interoffice mail, or the professor can pick them up at the Circulation Desk.
All library materials will be re-shelved to the appropriate locations.
All assets of the NSU Oceanographic Campus Library (OCL) are available to NSU current students, faculty, and staff. In order to receive services at the Circulation Desk of the OCL it is mandatory to have one of the following applicable identification:
