Occupational Therapy 3D Printing Project
OCT5015: Context & the Environment on Occupation
The project was organized around the environmental obstacles faced by 4 clients who were referred either by the students or faculty. All had impairments involving movement, vision, cognition, and/or sensory processing. These 3D printed assistive devices were designed by the students to reach the mission of their clients. The project included creation of an occupational profile of the client, the client's goals related to their occupations, identifying possible solutions, and educating the client about those proposed solutions. The solutions they proposed included assistive technology, community resources, and home modification. Students had an initial meeting with the clients, followed up virtually, and had a final "reveal" with the clients last week (August 1st, 2018).- Dr. Rachelle Dorne, Ed.D., OTR/L, CAPS
We are choosing...a typing joystick, for our client. He was involved in an incomplete spinal cord injury and lost his proficiency in typing. One of his goal is to return to work as a computer engineer, which will obviously require much use of computers and keyboards. Our thought process behind choosing this 3D printing option is to give our client an opportunity to explore another means of typing. He only has functional use of his left, non-dominant, hand. This typing joystick will allow him flexibility on and around the keyboard, and hopefully with practice, he will be able to increase his typing speed.

Our client has trouble with the amount of shower products he uses, He always uses too much. We thought using a half push spacer would eliminate over using the product.

Our client is blind and has cognitive impairments. He enjoys coffee and is able to make it for himself in the morning with K-cups. In his current home he has a special coffee container. Since he is moving, we wanted to give him a new compartment that he could use and feel labels on so that he could make his coffee. It would help with his routines and habits for his morning.

This object was chosen for the client so that she could place a cup or water bottle securely on her wheelchair.

We chose a bag holder because our client experiences difficulty carrying bags home from the grocery store in her wheelchair. We thought this would be a simple and easy device she could attach to her chair to carry multiple bags.

Our client shared with us that some of her anxiety is rooted in her struggle with time management. As such we plan to create a guide that explores time and anxiety management skills. We also plan to use the hobbies and interests our client shared with us to help her manage her anxiety. For example, after talking with our client, it was discovered she enjoys playing with puzzles as a leisure activity. The client also expressed that she fidgets with objects as a way of calming her anxiety. Going off of this, we came up with the idea of printing her a “brain teaser puzzle” on the 3D printer for her to manipulate in times of stress to help modulate her emotions. When we presented this idea to our client, she loved the idea and agreed it could be useful. All of these interventions are geared towards preventing and limiting as many negative reactions to her environment as possible throughout her college career.

This 3D deck of cards was designed for a client with cortical blindness if order to increase his social participation. This deck of cards has raised numbers and suits so he is able to differentiate each card. Our client does not read braille, so the numbers and suits are in a standard format. This also enables any person to read the cards and play along with him. In addition, the cards have a raised ridge running along the bottom so that he is able to orient each card and read it correctly. We hope that this deck of cards will allow our client to participate in a common activity that everyone can play.

Our client has a C2-C5 incomplete spinal cord injury and has difficulty using both hands to tie his shoes. The shoe clips can be used with one hand . The shoe clips will benefit him by enabling him to independently tie his shoes.

As something we can all relate to, we decide to try and liven up this morning routine a little bit for her. Music is something that can make simple things a little more fun. Therefore, we decided that we would create this over the shower container to amplify her music. This way, she could listen to music while getting ready for the day. We chose the Hamilton logo simply because the client expressed having a strong interest in the musical.
