What is Juneteenth?

It commemorates June 19th, 1865, when the abolition of slavery was announced in Galveston, Texas, by General Granger of the Union Army. This signaled freedom for enslaved African Americans in Texas, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln.
