Scientific Models & Kits

Details of the scientific models and kits available for checkout at the Alvin Sherman Library

Checkout Policies

NSU students, faculty, staff, alumni, and Broward patrons must have an NSU Library account in good standing in order to checkout anatomy and physiology models. Models can be checked out at the Alvin Sherman Library Circulation Desk, located on the first floor by the entrance, for two hours at a time for in-library use only. Late fees will be applied if models are not returned on time.

If a model is damaged, the Circulation Department will estimate at what point a model or set is not usable. The borrower will be responsible for the replacement cost if the models are not returned or are returned in an unusable condition.

Models

The skin model shows the microscopic structure of the human skin in detail. With the help of the different skin sections of the hairless skin (for example palm of hand) and the hairy skin (for example forearm) the different skin cell layers as well as the embedded sweat glands, touch receptor, blood vessels, nerves and a hair with root can be seen. Furthermore a nail section model on the base shows the nail plate, nail bed and the nail root. The representation of a hair root with all its cell layers completes the skin model.

The male skull shows all structures including the foramina and teeth. It also features a sectioned, removable calvarium and hinged jaw.

The human heart model separates into 7 parts and comes on a base. It is sectioned so that both ventricles and atria open to expose the valves. Large blood vessels near the heart and musculature of the heart are shown as well. The model is numbered and comes with a key card.

View all the major organelles, including the nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, ribosomes, Golgi apparatus, and centrioles, enlarged 10,000X, on one three-dimensional, colorful model. The one-piece model is mounted on a height-adjustable stand.

The three-model set displays the differences between cardiac, skeletal, and smooth muscle structures. The cardiac muscle cell, enlarged 1500 times, is dissected to display syncytial fiber arrangement and Purkinje cells; the skeletal muscle, enlarged 1000x, shows the union with both and tendon, and sarcolemma; and the smooth muscle, enlarged 2500x, exhibits the capillary and motor end plate of the autonomic nerve.

This set provides students with a detailed view of blood elements without a microscope. Cast in durable, lightweight plastic and hand painted under the direction of our staff anatomist for realistic features, the eight individual models consist of the erythrocyte, neutrophil, eosinophil, basophil, small lymphocyte, large lymphocyte, monocyte, and platelets.

The models are enlarged 10,000x and are rendered in a centimeter scale that equals micron dimensions of cells in blood smears.
