Session Descriptions

Session Description
KEYNOTE--Selecting a Journal Wisely Selecting a journal for your paper has never been more convenient, but it also has never been more challenging. To help you make this important decision for your submission, I will share five criteria for you to use to assess the quality of candidate periodicals: Publisher Integrity, Journal Standing, Editorial Credibility, Accessibility Flexibility, and Promotional Power. Sample journal websites will be critiqued to help you become critical connoisseurs of optimal journal homes for your scholarly works.
Why and How to Prepare a Compelling Book Proposal This session will “demystify” the book proposal process, help researchers understand what publishing houses are looking for, and provide tips and insider knowledge to help maximize the chances of proposal acceptance. We will go in-depth into the drivers of book publishing, the types of scholarly books available and the proposal and pee-review process. This session aims to give you an audience for your idea, get you sharing your knowledge, and get you writing!
Literary Hustle: Promote and Champion Your Writing For any writer, getting a short story or personal essay published is a milestone. But how do you get your work published in the first place? And once it's published, what do you do next? The same skills apply for an author having their book published. Once a book enters the marketplace, how do people find out about it? Whether or not you receive promotional support, no one will believe in your work as much as you and it's up to you to ensure potential readers find out about it. In this session, freelance writer and publicist Raj Tawney will share basic tips and tools for navigating the media and book industry landscape.
Publishing with IEEE New and experienced authors alike will benefit from this session presented by Tiffany McKerahan, Manager of Author Engagement & Support at IEEE.  Learn about the steps needed to get your work published, publishing ethics, and the tools and resources IEEE offers to help you along the way.
Forging Your Own Path: A Neurodiverse Author Finds Her Way Join author Adrianna Cuevas as she talks about her journey from imaginative child to award-winning author. Cuevas will describe her path to publication as a writer with ADHD, offering tips and advice to pre-published authors, encouraging them to embrace their own experiences and strengths.
Is a journal really the only publishing option? When thinking about the best way to share your latest research results, most academics think about journals or, in the humanities book publishers. But over the past few years, certainly since Covid, it’s got more complicated. There’s the question of whether to make your research open access. What about pre-prints? Or how about writing a blog post or getting invited to speak on a podcast? Does your funder even want you to publish in a journal? In this presentation, you’ll hear from a long-term publisher about the spectrum of publishing options that are now available, their strengths and weaknesses - and how a combination of formats might be the best option.
How to Write a Publishable Thesis or Dissertation Why put all that effort into your thesis or dissertation if it won't be publishable? Come learn from the NSU Writing and Communication Center how to manage the process to avoid things like writer’s block and predatory publishers, as well as best practices for composing texts using available tools (including generative AI) in ways that are effective, ethical, and attractive to editors and publishers.
Publishing Cases with Sage In this workshop, we will discuss how to develop effective teaching cases for a global audience. Participants will learn about different kinds of cases, best practices for ideation and drafting, and how to navigate the peer review and publishing process.
Writing Young Adult and Middle Grade books: Humor, Pacing and Plot "The best way to cheer yourself up is to try to cheer somebody else up." - Mark Twain  What makes something funny? How are humor, pacing, and plot related in a novel? How do these elements differ when writing for young people? Whether you already write humor or want to add humor to your current manuscript, this workshop will give you practical tips on how to use time-tested comedy tropes without being cliche. I'll also show you techniques for knowing your target age range and audience, fluid pacing, and plotting. Come prepared for fun writing exercises and discussion.
The Art of Storytelling...How to Create Fiction Come to this interactive session and learn how to create characters, tricks to fire your imagination, and using life lessons. Mike Greene will share examples of how he arrived at stories as the base of his 20+ novels.
Navigating the Evolving Research Publishing Landscape This workshop will start with a discussion of NSU's transition from the old Selected Works faculty profile pages to the new, enhanced Pure Profiles.  We will then learn how to log in to the profiles, edit existing content, and add new content as part of the basics of using this new profile system.  From there we will discuss some of the more advanced features of Pure including adding relationships to your records, project timelines, and importing from Faculty Success (Insights).  Faculty should expect to leave this workshop with good working knowledge of how to manage their Pure profiles and where to go to for additional support, if needed. For full-time NSU faculty, computers will be provided during this workshop, but please bring your own laptop if you wish.
Unconditional Love and Resilience in Writing Dara will discuss how stories — both fiction and nonfiction — connect us to ourselves, our relationships, and our communities. Attendees will learn about the process of writing a story that feels personal and authentic, how to write from the heart, and why stories connect us. She will cover themes of intergenerational love, the choices we are forced to make, and how radiance emerges from our breaking points.
How to Avoid Predatory Publishers The academic publishing world can be complex and, at times, overwhelming—especially with the rise of predatory publishers. These deceptive entities often exploit researchers by offering quick publication at the cost of quality, credibility, and ethics. Join Sage Publishing for this informative session where we’ll equip you with the tools to identify and steer clear of predatory publishers. Topics covered will include recognizing red flags in journal solicitations; evaluating journal credibility using trusted resources like the DOAJ; understanding the importance of peer review and indexing; and practical tips for finding reputable journals aligned with your research goals. Led by Jessica Offenberger from Sage Publishing, this session is designed to empower you to protect your work and academic reputation.
Tell the Story Only You Can & Thrive in Today's Publishing World Get actionable information and effective strategies to shorten your path toward book deals, book sales, thriving platforms, and leadership potential in the world of books.

Research Smarter with the Web of Science Research Assistant Al as a technology presents significant opportunities and challenges for academic research. Find out how Clarivate’s Web of Science is packaging this technology in a way that solves real world problems for researchers while ensuring trustworthiness and reliability.
How to Ensure Your Research Makes an Impact Are you ready to take your research to new heights? Join us to discover how to break free from the ivory tower and position your work for real-world impact. This session provides actionable insights on communicating research clearly, crafting compelling narratives and enhancing visibility. We’ll dive into strategies for boosting the reach of your research outputs, mastering the art of self-promotion, and unlocking the know-how of writing for broader and diverse audiences. We’ll also explore how research and publishing ecosystems driven by Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) values, and by a mission-led approach aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), can be a catalyst for a movement of positive change worldwide, and build a future where everyone’s voice matters. Prepare to be empowered to transform your academic journey and find a global stage for your work with real-world impact at the forefront.
Pitch, Publish, Prosper: Navigating Editorial Success in Book Publishing Leading an edited book empowers researchers to shape their field’s discourse by curating diverse perspectives, fostering collaboration, and advancing knowledge. Collaborating with contributors from varied backgrounds enriches the content, enhances the book's discoverability, and amplifies its long-term impact. Strong contributorship not only elevates the publication but also solidifies its role as a visible and influential resource within the academic community. Edited books boost the editor’s reputation as a thought leader, provide contributors with a platform to showcase their expertise, and inspire further research. This presentation will guide researchers in developing impactful book proposals, understanding the responsibilities of editorship, and strategically managing the publication process for maximum success and visibility.
Getting Published: Forging a Path with Craft, Passion, and Persistence

#1 New York Times bestselling author Meg Gardiner will speak about her journey from practicing law to writing seventeen published thrillers, and how she has navigated the ups, downs, struggles, and joys of working as a writer.

Class is in Session: Open Access Resource and Student Success The prevalence of open access resources (OER) has grown exponentially over the last 10 years. Students are increasingly unable to afford the high costs of traditional textbooks, and faculty have responded by seeking out OA alternatives. What does this shift mean for academic libraries and how can you make OER easier to implement on your campus? Join us as we explore how students and researchers are already using OER, investigate the trends in higher education that are prompting the movement, and uncover how CloudSource – the OA-forward discovery platform from SirsiDynix – is changing how you discover and use open educational resources.
Managing and Updating Your NSU Faculty Pure Profiles This workshop will start with a discussion of NSU's transition from the old Selected Works faculty profile pages to the new, enhanced Pure Profiles.
