Javaka Steptoe Javaka Steptoe won the 2017 Caldecott Medal and the Corretta Scott King Book Award for Radiant Child. He is an eclectic artist, designer and illustrator who has made an outstanding contribution to children’s literature. He was inspired by his parents, including children’s book author and illustrator, John Steptoe.
Gordon C. James Gordon C. James is an artist who draws influence from impressionists. He describes his art as having lyricism, sensitivity, and commitment to excellence. He has worked with authors such as Patricia McKissack and Derrick Barnes
Derrick Barnes Barnes is a hallmark card writer turned children’s author. His books celebrate African American culture and feature positive images of black children in everyday contexts. Barnes’ first picture book was Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut.
Patricia McKissack McKissack was a prolific children’s author, writing over 100 books. She began writing in 1975 and became a fulltime author in 1980. She worked with her husband to research and write books to make African American history come alive for their children.
Nikki Grimes Nikki Grimes is a poet, journalist, and author. She writes for children and adults and her works include Jazmin’s Notebook, The Road to Paris, and Words with Wings. She has been given several awards for her contributions to children’s literature
