EDD 8100: Academic Writing

This guide provides access to library resources that support EDD 8100.

Course Description: 

This course will introduce students to academic writing and skills relevant to achieving success in a doctoral degree program and academia in general. The content will cover the foundation for scholarly writing through rigorous examination of the rules and expectations for format and style, objective communication, and synthesis of literature. Students will also learn how to uphold standards of academic integrity, avoid plagiarism, and integrate evidence into their writing. In addition, they will engage in scholarly writing exercises and assignments in order to learn the form and function of key academic documents, such as a summary, annotated bibliography, academic paper, and literature review.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the value and purpose of academic and scholarly writing.  
  • Acquire different study skills, including understanding the requirements of a doctoral student.
  • Read and critically appraise academic literature and understand the conventions of academic writing.
  • Plan and prepare a writing piece for academic purposes.
  • Synthesize diverse literature within students' chosen concentration.
  • Identify examples of plagiarism, use strategies to avoid it, and apply APA style to citing and referencing. 
  • Structure a critical writing piece, presenting a compelling argument and using evidence to support an idea.
