Conferences, symposia, and other meetings are one of the primary ways that scientists and other academics communicate with one another. Gathering in person allows for the quick exchange of new information. Usually such meetings will include the presentation of new information through the readings of reports to one another. Often these will be publisher either in book form or within specialized journals.
