Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE)

All Mental Health Counseling concentration students are required to complete the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE). The CPCE is made up of 8 sections totaling 160 questions. The sections are as follows: Human Growth and Development, Social and Cultural Foundations, Helping Relationships, Group Work, Career and Lifestyle Development, Appraisal, Research and Program Evaluation, and Professional Orientation and Ethics.

National Counselor Exam

Counseling students must pass the National Counselor Exam (NCE) to attain national certification in counseling. The exam consists of 200 questions in 8 subject areas. The subject areas are as follows: Human Growth and Development, Social and Cultural Diversity, Helping Relationships, Group Work, Career Development, Assessment, Research and Program Evaluation and Professional Orientation and Ethical Practice.

National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination

The National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) is a specialty certification for clinical mental health counseling students. The exam is used to certify clinical competency. The NCMHCE, "...consists of 10 clinical mental health counseling cases. Each case is divided into five to 10 sections classified as either Information Gathering (IG) or Decision Making (DM)." (NBCC.org) The exam consists of three parts; Assessment and Diagnosis, Counseling and Psychotherapy, and Administration, Consultation and Supervision.
