About This Guide

The subject guide to Digital Humanities provides information on resources for
students and faculty related to the creation and development of digital humanities projects, assignments, as well as, associated tools and tutorials.

What is Digital Humanities?

Digital Humanities is a collaborative and interdisciplinary field, comprised of a broad range of scholarly activities that apply technologies to humanities research and at the same time expands traditional forms of scholarly communication. Digital Humanities (DH) is a field that intersects Information and Communication Technology (ICT), or computer technology, with the traditional study of human experiences and expressions.  This can include:

  • The preservation and sharing of collections that are otherwise difficult to access (e.g., the creation of digital editions, archives, maps, visualizations and exhibitions, often through collaboration between faculty, students, librarians, technologists and others).

  • The fostering of new creative expression by using digital media (e.g., social media, human-computer interaction, and cultural informatics).

  • The use, analysis and/or creation of digital tools for research or in the classroom.

For a summary of the history of Digital Humanities - the discipline formerly known as Humanities Computing - read Susan Hockey's "The History of Humanities Computing" in A Companion to Digital Humanities, ed. Susan Schreibman, Ray Siemens, John Unsworth. Oxford: Blackwell, 2004.
