What is ChatGPT?
- At its essence, ChatGPT is a form of artificial intelligence. It is a large language model-based chatbot developed by the company OpenAI and launched on November 30, 2022. The model was trained to interact in a conversational way by answering user prompts. This dialogue format allows ChatGPT to answer follow-up questions, admit mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and even reject inappropriate requests.
- GPT-4 was released in March 2023. According to OpenAI, GPT-4 is "more creative and collaborative than ever before. It can generate, edit, and iterate with users on creative and technical writing tasks, such as composing songs, writing screenplays, or learning a user’s writing style.", though it still has known limitations, such as social biases, hallucinations, and adversarial prompts.
- In September 2023 OpenAI announced that ChatGPT has the ability to browse the internet to provide up-to-date information, and is no longer limited to data before September 2021. With this latest update, ChatGPT can now analyze and respond to images. and users can query and receive responses verbally.
User Prompts
- ChatGPT uses a chatbot interface to generate natural language answers to user prompts in a dialogue format. A user prompt is a set of natural language instructions that the user enters in the ChatGPT interface to carry out a specific task. The prompt can be refined to guide the dialogue output towards the desired length, format, style, detail, and language.
Training Future ChatGPT Models
- OpenAI's policy states that data submitted through ChatGPT may be used to improve their models. To opt out of this feature, you can switch off training in ChatGPT settings (under Data Controls) or you can submit this form. After opting out, your new conversations will not be used to train ChatGPT.
