Course Description

This course will cover the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of anxiety disorders. Available literature on treatment outcome studies, as well as current literature on the theories of anxiety disorders will be reviewed. The course will focus on treatment applications of anxious patients. Treatment modalities will include cognitive/behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and motivational interviewing approaches. Students will practice the interventions studied.

Learning Outcomes

  • To understand theories, methods, and efficacy evidence for BT & CBT for several disorders, primarily anxiety and affective disorders
  • To understand informational processing models of anxiety
  • To understand neurobiological models of anxiety
  • Introduction and practice in "third wave" behavior therapies such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • To understand the different types of assessment techniques for anxiety disorders, their utility, and their limitations
  • Develop function-based treatment strategies based on the results of these assessments
  • To conceptualize and treat patients with anxiety disorders using these approaches.
  • These general objectives will be attained by your (1) reading of each assigned chapter and research article, (2) discussing the points of each chapter/article during class, (3) responding appropriately to examinations based on the text and class discussion, and (4) presentation of research projects relevant to class material.
