Introduction to Environmental Chemistry:

This course teaches the basic principles of chemistry using examples from the environment. Through a brief introduction to areas of inorganic, organic, and biochemistry, the diversity of chemical pollutants in the environment will be explored. Emphasis will be placed on environmental issues such as the sources of chemical pollutants, the reactions that produce them, and their toxicity. A basic level of algebra is essential. 

Environmental Chemistry:

In this course, fundamental principles of chemistry, such as kinetics, equilibrium and bonding, are used to understand the sources, fates and transformations of chemical components in the natural and polluted environments. The topics to be discussed include energy utilization, stratospheric ozone depletion, climate change, air pollution and control, water pollution and treatment, toxic chemicals. Some focus will be placed on environmental implications of energy utilization, chemistry of the atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, and biosphere.

Intro to Environmental Chemistry:

  • Describe the impact of chemical technology
  • Locate information about chemicals and their impacts on the environment
  • Describe the origins of matter, the earth and our solar system
  • Describe and use the periodic table
  • Describe chemical bonding
  • Perform simple stoichiometric calculations
  • Assess the impact of recycling on energy resources
  • Describe the role of energy in chemical reactions
  • Describe the special nature of carbon compound and water
  • Describe the behavior of gases

Environmental Chemistry:

  • Describe how fundamental principles of chemistry are applied to a range of environmental issues in their monitoring, evaluation and remediation
  • Describe chemical processes in the atmosphere, including stratospheric ozone depletion, photochemical smog, and acid rain
  • Discuss the roles of greenhouse gases, aerosols and clouds in climate change
  • Describe water pollution mechanisms and treatment technologies
  • Use acid-base equilibrium to describe watershed buffering
  • Explain the concepts of toxic chemicals in the environment, such as dioxins, pesticides and toxic metals
