Basic Look at Video Editing

A basic look at the video editing applications iMovie & Adobe Premiere Rush

File Options

Once a project has started and the files are loaded you will be able to see them in the timeline. Each clip can be edited individually by right clicking on it, for a tablet or phone just tap the clip. This gives the opportunity to delete the clip from the timeline, duplicate it, split the clip, or separate the audio from the clip. On a smart device there will be limited options and they will be just below the timeline.

*Note: Editing on a Mac gives different options than editing on an iOS device. You cannot sync your projects through iMovie as you would through Adobe Premiere Rush.

Separating Audio

If you want to separate the audio from a clip, right click and click Detach Audio. For a smart device tap the clip and on the bottom you will see the option of Detach. You will then see the audio track of that clip or file on the bottom of it in green or blue. You can now manipulate the audio clip as you like.

Project Audio

To add audio from files that exist in your Mac click Audio & Video at the top of the screen. On an iOS device click the plus sign to import files. On a Mac it will show you options of Music, which is music already downloaded into your iTunes. Please be aware of copyright before using these files. There is also the option of Sound Effects, which are files that are free with iMovie. On an iOS device you will have the options of adding in music from your own library, or music that is free with iMovie.

Adjusting Volume

There are different ways to adjust the audio for iMovie. By clicking Volume at the top of the screen on a Mac you can choose the volume level you'd like from there. On an iOS device click the Volume option is at the bottom. On a Mac you can drag the bar on the audio clip up and down to the volume level of your preference, this way cannot be done on an iOS device.

Audio Fade

iMovie gives the option to fade your audio. To do this on the Mac, just grab the gray dot on the audio clip where the bar of the volume level rests, and drag to the point in the audio where you want it to begin to fade. On an iOS device after tapping volume the bottom of the screen on the right will say Fade. Once you tap Fade the audio clip will have a yellow triangle that you will drag to the point in the audio where you want it to begin to fade.

Noise

One option that is available on a Mac that is not on an iOS device is Noise Reduction and Equalizer. By checking the Reduce background noise box and choosing the percentage, you can adjust the background level to your preference. The Equalizer is there to boost different ranges of audio depending on your needs.

Audio Filters

The Audio Filters option is another one that is only available on a Mac, and not an iOS device. This option lets you put a filter or effect on your audio clip.
