Industry Research

This guide is a collection of resources that will help you with your industry research. You can look for ready made industry profiles or you can compile your own with information from a variety of sources.

Key resources for industry players

This section will show you how to identify main players of an industry. For more tips on how to find information about specific companies or how to build lists of players by industry, please refer to the Company Information Guide.

Multiple reports have a special section where they list top companies.

Industry players can be found in the following databases in our library collection

  • icon of a building Users listed next to this icon have access on campus. (This will often say ALL indicating all users have access on campus. There are a few exceptions.) 
  • icon of a house Users listed next to this icon have access off campus.

Business Market Research Collection

Search tips:

  • Look up companies by name; you can also filter by Document type: company profile. 

Business Source Premier

Search tips:

  • MarketLine reports available in this database include a “Leading Players” section. See section “Industry profiles” for instructions about how to find MarketLine reports.

Gale Business: Insights

Search tips:

  • Companies -- Company finder to search for companies or build lists, SWOT, investment or financial reports for specific companies

Gale Directory Library

Search tips:

  • See the Business Rankings Annual for Top 10 lists in various industries. Occasionally you can find market share in some of the ranking.
  • See Market Share Reporter for lists of producers/products along with their market share. Only some of these lists provide names of companies, the rest only offer segmentation by product/service/client base/etc.

IbisWorld

Search tips:

  • See dedicated section called “Major Companies” where you will find information on individual companies as well as their market share.

Mergent Online

Search tips:

  • From Basic search enter symbol or company name – if you want to include private companies, check the D&B Private Company Database box above the search box.
  • Go to D&B 20m plus private company search (3rd tab) to do a search by name or produce a list and rank companies by revenue to identify top players.
