Faculty FAQ’s for the NSU Oceanographic Campus Library
Faculty FAQ’s for the NSU Oceanographic Campus Library
1. Who can come out to the Oceanographic Campus Library? ANY NSU Faculty, Staff, or Student can utilize our library and its services. Just bring your NSU SharkCard!
2. How do the Oceanographic Librarians support learning in the classroom? Jaime and Keri are constantly working to develop new ideas for embedded librarianship. Book a session with us at this link here. Some of the ways we currently support our faculty and students in the classroom are:
a. Custom-tailored instructional sessions based on curriculum. One of our Scientific Communications workshops led to the creation and facilitation of the Digital Tools for School LibGuide. We can create other guides for your classroom needs! Email us at oclibrary@nova.edu.
b. Open Pedagogy Support: Have your students create rather than consume information! Dr. Kerstetter’s Fisheries and Avian Ecologies classes learn how to prepare skulls and jaws from birds, fish, sharks and rays for preservation, learn how to use our in-house 3D scanners to scan their fully prepped materials, and then publish their scans in NSUWorks and on SketchFab.
c. Endnote and Citation Management: Endnote has a learning curve to it. Our guide makes it easier to navigate and our in-library and in-class instruction sessions make it a no-brainer.
3. I need to order a book/ebook for my class to use in the library. How do I do this? Not only can we order materials for you using this form, but we can help select affordable textbooks / OERs / and library curated content for you.
4. I’m writing a grant and need some help. Who do I go to? While the Office of Sponsored Programsshould definitely be on your list of people to contact, we can also assist you with the preliminary ins and outs, particularly with the PFRDG grant. Keep us in the loop!
5. I just published a paper and want to put it on my personal website and on social media like Facebook and ResearchGate. Can I do this? Not necessarily. Your librarians can help you with dissemination, though! Through NSUWorks, we can archive your materials either as a full-text PDF (with Creative Commons licensing), a full-text post-print with or without embargo depending on the publication, or as an OpenURL that allows anyone anywhere in the world the ability to access your article through their library’s databases.
6. Do you have different things at the Oceanographic Campus Library that the Alvin Sherman Library doesn’t have? We do! We have hardware and software guides that showcase all the special resources you have access to out here. Some highlights are our macro and full size 3D scanners, PRIMER-E and BioRender software, and GoPro Cameras! We also have poster-tubes available for check out for your conference needs!
