How to insert EndNote linked in-text citations in MS Word using EndNote's Cite While You Write (CWYW) tool:

If you want to search your entire EndNote library for a citation in insert into MS Word using the Cite While You Write Tool, insert an * (asterisk) in the search box.  

 


 


How to change how an in-text citation displays in MS Word

If you want to edit the number of authors listed or when the et al. appears, you can do so by following these steps: 

While In the EndNote Program: 

  1. Select the style you wish to update from drop-down menu at the top of the screen
  2. Click on: EDIT --> OUTPUT STYLES --> EDIT the desired style
  3. Under CITATIONS, click on AUTHOR LISTS
  4. Edit the settings as needed
    1. i.e. if 3 or more authors, list the first 2 authors and abbreviate with et al.
    2. Select the Italic or not check box
  5. Click on FILE --> SAVE AS --> Style Name Copy
  6. Go to MS Word and on the EndNote X9 tab, select this updated style
  7. In MS Word, click on Update Bibliography to apply any changes
