Step 7: Updating the Journals Term List

Some databases import only the abbreviated journal name while your style may call for the full journal name – and vice versa. Endnote provides a  Journals Term List, so the journal names in your bibliography are either the full name or the abbreviation, as your style requires.

  1. In EndNote, go to "Library > Open Term Lists > Journals Term List".

  2. If the Journal Term List is empty, skip to step 4. If not, highlight the first journal, and press [Ctrl]+A on the keyboard to highlight all the terms (on a Macintosh, this would be [Command]+A).
  3. Next, press the "Delete Term" button to the right.
  4. Now go to the "Lists" tab at the top, and click on the "Import List" button.

  5. Browse to the Term Lists folder within the EndNote folder, and choose the correct subject file(s)
    • If you are on a Windows machine, this folder should default to:
      C:\Program Files\EndNote (EndNote Version Number)\Term Lists
    • If you are on a 64-bit Windows machine, this folder should default to:
      C:\Program Files (X86)\EndNote (EndNote Version Number)\Term Lists
    • If you are on a Mac, this folder should default to:
      Hard Drive: Applications: EndNote (EndNote Version Number): Terms
  6. Choose the correct subject file (s) in the Term List
  7. This will import the correct abbreviations and full journal names for those subject journals.  You may have to repeat these steps to do more than 1 terms list, as there are multiple.
  8. Next, to make sure the style is using the correct substitution, go to "Tools > Output Styles > Open Style Manager".
  9. In the list of styles, highlight the style you are using and click the "Edit" button.
  10. Click on "Journal Names".
  11. Make sure the style is using the Full Name or one of the Abbreviations as needed. Save any changes under a new name for example "APA 6th full journal names".
  12. If you had to save the changes, select the new citation name from the Citation Styles dropdown box in your EndNote library.

Tips

If the journal name in your actual imported reference doesn't match up exactly with the full name or one of the abbreviations in the terms list, the substitution will not take place.

A single space or the inclusion of a period at the end of the name is enough for it to not be considered a match.

Solution

If the journal name or abbreviation is incorrect in the reference--Go to the journal name field in the reference and correct it.

If the journal name or abbreviation is incorrect in the Journal Terms List-- Go to Tools > Open Terms List > Journals Term List> Select Journal > Edit Term
