EndNote 21

Overview of EndNote Online

EndNote is a reference management solution with both a desktop and online component. When used on the desktop, it may be called “EndNote desktop” or “EndNote on the desktop.” When used online, it may be called “EndNote online.” EndNote users can synchronize all the references in one desktop library to their online library, and share the entire library with other EndNote users.  Their online library can contain an unlimited number of references and unlimited attachments. (If you have a Chromebook, are an alum, or a public patron, and have to use EndNote Online Basic, read about those options in the Clarivate guide. EndNote basic users have limits on the number of references and attachments that can be stored.)

EndNote Online (also referred to as EndNote Web) is a web based tool that is included in NSU's EndNote Desktop subscription. It can sync with your EndNote Desktop library and allow you to access & share your references anywhere.

  • Access your EndNote library when away from your desktop
  • Share groups of references with other EndNote Online users
  • Add, store & organize your references and PDFs
  • Use EndNote Online to synchronize your EndNote library between the multiple devices.

Although EndNote Online offers many great features, it does not offer the full functionality of the EndNote Desktop version. Here are the key differences (limitations) of EndNote Online.

  • Journal names will not automatically format correctly in a Word document (full name or abbreviated name)
  • PDFs cannot be annotated or highlighted
  • Cannot run a search for full text PDFs
