Exporting References from Google Scholar

NOTE:  If you are going to use Google Scholar to import references into Endnote, please be aware they may not be fully complete and you will need to go through each one and check.  We all love Google Scholar, but this feature may not be fully realized.

 

Exporting References from Google Scholar:

  1. Go to https://scholar.google.com/
  2. Click on the 3 line menu at the top left 
  3. Click on Settings
  4. Under Bibliography Manager, click next to "Show links to import citations into" and select EndNote from the Dropdown box
  5. Click Save

There are two choices to export the citation in Scholar:

Choice 1:

When you find an article in Google Scholar, click on the (new) "Import to Endnote" link under the citation.

Choice 2:

When you find an article in Google Scholar, click on the quotation marks symbol to Cite and select EndNote at the bottom of the pop-up window. 

 

 Second Warning! 

Double check that your Google Scholar file (ENW) uploaded correctly into EndNote.  EN20 can be missing an Import Filter setting that you can manually fix if you find that your Journal field is blank and the Journal name is showing up at the end of the Author field. 

If you see this: 

 

Do this:

  1. Open EndNote 20
  2. Click “Tools”>”Import Filters”>”Open Filters Manager”
  3. From there, scroll down and look for “EndNote Import” - click on it and click “Edit”
  4. Click “Templates” on the left and under Reference Types dropdown click “Journal Article”
  5. Scroll through to look for %J (Journal).  If there, you should be good, but if not, scroll down to the last field and hit enter.
  6. Click in the Field(s) cell for the new line, then click “Insert Field” at the top - select "Journal"
  7. Under “Tag” type in “%J” 
  8. Close and save by clicking the small X at the top right hand corner of the page

Alternative Solution: 

You must replace the existing EndNote import filter "EndNote Import.enf".  To do so, download the updated "EndNote Import" filter from here: https://endnote.com/filter_download/endnote-import/.  After downloading the filter, please close EndNote program and follow the steps below:

  • Mac: Navigate to Finder>Applications>EndNote 20>Filters
  • Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\EndNote 20\Filters
    • Now copy and paste the filter to the above mentioned location. Once this is done, open your EndNote library, and try importing references from Google Scholar and check how it works.
